Originally from Texas, Tylene received her BA in Architectural Studies and History of Art from Brown University and her MA in the History of Decorative Arts & Design from Parsons School of Design. In 2006, she relocated from New York City to Shanghai, China to establish ArtToursChina, which provides guided art tours and art consulting services to those looking for insight into an always evolving and sometimes baffling contemporary Chinese art scene. When Tylene is not out on one of her walking tours, weaving in and out of moped traffic and avoiding other occupational hazards, she spends her time learning Mandarin, documenting daily life in China’s largest city, and doing her part to make China a greener place to live, one reusable chopstick at a time.

Hi Tylene
Likerd the blog and glad you featured one of our ecocoffins. Strangely enough we lived in Hong Kong for 5 years in the 90’s - on Lamma. We loved our time there.

I have a question. We’re trying to find the relevant contact in Hong Kong to talk to abut more sustainable coffins. Might you be able to point us in the right direction. We’d really appreciate it.

Hi Sophie,

Your best bet would be to contact Hong Kong’s Health, Welfare and Food Bureau since they are responsible for the eco-coffin pamphlets that have been circulated. The permanent secretary, Carrie Yau has voiced her support for the coffins, so perhaps you could try reaching her first. Here is their link: http://www.hwfb.gov.hk/en/index.html

tylene, seem to really know about the town, u live in hongkong also? i read about the eco-coffin too, however, would be very hard to change the chinese tradition but at least to get it starts!

Thanks for the article on my Green Microgym! It’s pretty great to see the responses from readers! I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Looks like we’ll be able to get a “net producing” gym going in Portland soon due to the great Solar and renewable incentives going on down there. The exposure from your article will help me attract and convince investors!
