SCRAPILE FURNITURE

Recycling junk materials to make new objects is good for the environment, as everyone knows. But in addition to being ecologically sound, recycled designs can be visually stunning as well. Case in point: the Scrapile line of furniture, created by Brooklyn-based designers Carlos Salgado and Bart Bettencourt. The pair has turned their love for discarded wood scraps into innovative, environmentally friendly furniture such as tables, benches, and chairs. Salgado and Bettencourt collect scraps from local woodshops, and piece the together using non-toxic water-soluble glue, thereby preventing wood from piling up in local landfills.
Due to the fabrication process, no two pieces of furniture are the same. Every item is unique and has a sense of history embedded in its materials. My favorite is the rectangular Scrapile Coffee Table (shown on the left).

The collection will also be on display at BKLYN DESIGNS this weekend (DUMBO, May 6 – 8, 2005) to kick off NYC Design week.
