ICELAND

by Jill Fehrenbacher

Attention Icelanders and friends of Iceland: I will be hitting Reykjavik from July 17th - 23rd, and I want to hear from you!

I have been trying to research the Icelandic design scene, and although I know there is one ? I haven’t been finding much on the internet. I would love to hear from (or even meet up with) anyone who has tips on where to go, what to do, and what to see in Reykjavik, particularly in relation to innovative Inhabitat?worthy design. I plan to soak it up in hot springs for a good portion of my trip, so bonus points to anyone who’s got tips on geothermal design.

Look forward to hearing from you!

I don’t know exactly where it is in relation to Reykjavik, but “Solheimar”:http://www.nat.is/travelguideeng/plofin_solheimar.htm sounds like it might be worth a trip. It’s an “eco-village” and features some fine architecture, including the “Sesseljuh?s”:http://www.archidose.org/Aug02/082602.html that I featured on my web site.

Have a great trip!

Iceland is very cool, with wonderful modern design found all over. Reykjavik is easy to explore on foot, and you can see modern design just about everywhere. Architecture, galleries, etc. Be sure to check out the Reykjavik City Hall, designed in 1986 by the architects Studio Granda. Also, check out Epal (http://www.epal.is) and a nice to visit is the National Museum of Iceland. BTW, a decent, cheap centrally located place to stay is the Salvation Army guesthouse (hostel). Enjoy!
