FLOWERS IN A CAN

by Jill Fehrenbacher

Flowers In A Can

If you’re lacking in space and gardening skills (like me), Flowers in a can is the answer to all your houseplant woes. These cheery canned flower kits are as easy as they come: just pop the top, add water, and presto - you have a cute little canned plant.

With the retro pastel designs, easy to follow instructions printed on the back of the can, and a choice of Pansy, Dahlia, Geranium or Impatiens, what more could you ask?

$20 for a set of two (from Uncommon Goods).

You might feel bad about how incredibly wasteful these little cans are though.

I don’t really think the cans are wasteful since you can continually pot new plants in them. It’s pretty much like a decorative pot. Plant some herbs for your kitchen and rotate them through the seasons. Just because it’s a can doesn’t mean you have to dispose of it!

There are already plenty of cans in the world that could use a new home/purpose. It’s wasteful because new cans are being manufactured to basically transport small quantities of dirt around. Cute design aside, dirt in a can isn’t exactly making the world a better place.

Plus, aluminum (I’m assuming they’re made out of aluminum) isn’t a good material for food plants.

two aluminum cans filled with dirt and two seeds with a price tag of $20? For that amount of money I could go to any nursery and buy two good sized clay pots and two geraniums etc. or maybe recycle my own coke cans….
