FLOATING HOMES

by Sarah Rich

Living on the water is little more than a pipe dream for most of us, even close to the coast. Among other more prohibitive factors, many waterborne accomodations are old, rundown houseboats with little appeal. But a new German company is changing that with the advent of Floating Homes, a prefab dwelling created especially for the water.

The Floating Home comes in three sizes, from 170m-sq-m to 200m-sq. The floor plans are flexible, with roof decks and extended water-level decking. Interiors feature a wide choice of hardwood (and teak) for flooring and Grohe fixtures. The site is not immensely detailed at the moment in terms of verbal content, but promises that more is on the way.

I’m completely taken with the aesthetic of these aquatic prefabs, so many more images are available after the jump, all courtesy of the Floating Homes website.

What is the benefit of these things in comparison to a houseboat.

I enjoy looking at the concept of the floating homes. I would rather see extremely efficient and eco-friendly designs that incorporate solar collection and water collection. The simpler the design the more appealing it is to me. When I see fancy curves and angles I know that the price is usually too high for a comfortable home. Just my opinion. Sincerely Roger Engley
