INSTA-BALCONY

by Sarah Rich

Given how cool and space-efficient Murphy beds are, it’s a wonder there aren’t more home furnishings that fold up and disappear flat against the wall. Hofman Dujardin Architects has come up with a new one, though it’s not so much space-saving as it is space-making. The Bloomframe is a window that folds out of an exterior wall to become a balcony. Created with urban density in mind, the Bloomframe is said to offer “small freedom in the city.” As Bright so aptly put it: Go, go, Gadget, Balcony!

Uh…why not just build a balcony with a door on it? A murphy bed makes sense because folding it up saves inhabitable space when you’re not using it. Unless you can use it to skirt around some zoning or legal issues preventing you from having a traditional balcony, I don’t really see what advantages it has over a normal balcony with a door. Infact, from the drawings on the PDF, it looks like it actually takes up space inside your apartment when it’s not in balcony mode.

Now for real space efficiency, pay close attention to Bruce Willis’ apartment in the movie The Fifth Element. There was some efficient, if not claustrophobic, design.

Here in Stockholm Sweden you basically need to make hell freeze over to get a permit to build a balcony on any apartment facing a road. Since the insta-balcony is non-permanent its an excellent solution. It will sure piss the neighbours off but it does not violate any zoning restrictions the way I see it.

I love this idea. I dont think this takes up space when its folded at all. I am designing a temporary stransportable shelter for my design class, and would love to have such balcony in that shelter.
