MATERIOUS BONE LAMP

by Jill Fehrenbacher, 05/20/06

We’ve recently become fans of Chicago-based Materious Design, ever since discovering their clever Cubby and innovative Wifi Umbrella. Now, today at the Haute Green exhibition in Brooklyn, we discovered yet another winning design from Materious: the gorgeous Bone Lamp.

Inspired by the structural efficiency of bird bones, which must be both strong and very light, the designers came up with this organic webbed form which plays off of negative space. The best part is that while the carved tubes resemble bone or ivory – they are actually made from recycled PVC sewer pipes recovered from a construction site. How great is that? Beautiful and environmentally friendly to boot!
