VOTE FOR FINALISTS – the Umbrella Inside Out Competition

by Sarah Rich, 09/12/06

Treehugger, Umbrella Inside Out Competition, Cradle to Cradle, recycling umbrellas

As you probably know by now, our pals at Treehugger have been running a competition called Umbrella Inside Out, which asks entrants to do two things: design an umbrella that actually holds up against the storms it’s made for; and design a couture garment from the material leftover from defunct umbrellas. Both designs serve as a vehicle for exploring Cradle to Cradle design principles.

The competition closed on September 1 and they’re on to the voting rounds for the garment design aspect of the competition. Last week, the posse of judges selected five finalists and now they’ve opened it up for you to throw in your $0.02. We’re voting for The Dusty (see above) – a deserving entry whose designer actually took the time to produce a real, wearable piece. Which entry do you prefer?

You said it all; since it’s the only “real, wearable piece” of the competition till now then I will definitely go for it. The other entries are merely selling projections for the time being.

help! The fugly “umbrella redesign” is currently in the lead here. Besides whatever aesthetic crimes the dress proposes ( it has not even been constructed), it is completely unUSABLE. I thought the aim of the competition was to redesign an object into a new use. This design has a shelf life of about three seconds.
vote for the Dusty!
simple, wearable, and AN ACTUAL GARMENT

Hey Aadil,

I have worn my dress!! I was the first to go, however. I was flattered just to be in the finals, since I actually didn’t make the dress for the competition, but for the first garment I ever made at design school. I guess since my favorites kept getting eliminated (I voted for Dusty too) I don’t feel so bad getting knocked out first.

While I agree about sketches vs. real garments, I actually loved the twister and thought it would have been cool if constructed. The design allowed for sketches to be entered, so it is not really a fault of the participants.
