Have a hard time finding a use for the other 9 volt battery you got in that 2-pack? Look no further that Richard Lawson’s charming DIY LED light: 9Vo(l)tive. Just stick one of these suckers on a 9 volt battery and you’ve got an instant LED candle. The greatest part about this glowing wonder is its size. You can take it everywhere for ambient lighting on the fly. We’ve yet to hear when the 9Vo(l)tive will go into production, but inquisitive minds should contact the designer (and if you get one of these, we naturally back the rechargeable route!).

Great idea. Now I have a use for the 9V batteries that I remove each year from my smoke detectors. They still have lots of life left in them. In case of a blackout I’ll be prepared. I would prefer a non-flickering version but maybe you can have a switch that provides an option.

but batteries are bad for the environment.

how can this light be sustainable?

how can a consumer afford to buy 10 batteries for ambient lighting on a dinner table, even if they were ok with using batteries?

isn’t that the aim of desingers these days?

I designed something like this years ago, and I sell it as a kit, no nice cover, but it works just the same, see http://www.ledsales.com.au/cart.php?target=product&product_id=162&category_id=31

My reason for doing this was all the smoke alarm batteries that were piling up. In Australia it is a legal requirement to have battery backed (or battery operated) smoke alarms for all homes, and it is strongly recommended that batteries are replaced every year. However, those batteries are usually close to full still, if you are using quality alkalines (and why wouldn’t you, in a device designed to save your life), so you would normally be throwing away near-new batteries - very wasteful.

So, when I get spare batteries, I just snap one of these on top and use it to replace nightlights etc, ideal for safety lights on stairs, nightlights for kids etc…

Man…I have been looking for an energy-saving battery powered light for my bathroom that has not a single electrical outlet other than the fan/light in the ceiling. Furthermore, I keep my 3-pound dog in there when I’m not home and I hate leaving her in the dark for hours at a time. I want one of these, like, YESTERDAY! Let me know when an where I can buy one! Thank you, nice breakthrough!
