Up until very recently, fashion and sustainability have been living in separate universes. Fortunately, in this day and age, you no longer need to be caught between your ethics and your aesthetics. With the increasing variety of stylish eco-fashion hitting the market, it has become easier than ever to find sustainably produced clothing that holds its own in the style arena.

Blue jeans are a staple of almost everyone’s wardrobe - man, woman, young and old. Its safe to say that we’d all like to find the perfect pair of jeans that will fit our values as well as they fit our bums. Today we are bringing you a roundup of our favorite eco-friendly jeans. Read on to find out more about the brands that have struck the perfect balance between sustainability and style.

LOOMSTATE
Loomstate has been a pioneer in organic denim that is high on the hip list. The company takes inspiration from American manufacturing methods used at the turn of the 19th century, in an age where craftsmanship, function and quality were standard.

LEVIS
Levi’s recently announced that they would be coming out with “Levi’s Eco” organic jeans. The highly anticipated line is set to launch next month. Among the styles made with 100% organic cotton are the Red Tab Vintage Straight Jean for men, and the women’s Skinny Jean and Skinny Knee Knocker Short. Other elements of the Levi’s Capital lines including the use of recycled buttons, rivets and zippers and natural indigo to dye some styles of jeans were employed for their minimized impact on the environment.

UNDESIGNED
The sleek denim trousers below are from Undesigned. They feature designer Carol Young’s signature exterior flap pocket and are made from an organic cotton, bamboo and lycra blend.

DEL FORTE
Last, but definitely not least, is Del Forte Denim. Quickly becoming every eco-gals favorite due to their figure flattering cut and the touch of lycra added for comfort. The jeans are made from organic cotton that is grown, milled, cut and sewn all in the U.S. Designer Tierra Del Forte has partnered with The Sustainable Cotton Project and donates a portion of her proceeds to the organization which builds bridges between farmers, manufacturers and consumers.

Also in the UK, check out Howies (www.howies.co.uk) their jeans are made from organic denim and are washed using something called the “Eco-ball” rather than chemicals for that extra special goodness. Their other organic cotton products are equally as good too.

Finally! It seems like it has taken awhile to see some fashionable takes on sustainablity in clothing. I have seen more and more popping up around and about. Bamboo fiber- so sweet. Very exciting to see. I have some organic jeans, and I like to think they feel better too.

OK, OK, I’m a denim-aholic. I’ve got a pair of just about everything in my closet.
Bought a pair of Loomstate (mantras) a while back - not too happy with them.
Make me look like a little “sloppy” in the front and the colour faded poorly.
Not to be discouraged, and wanting soooooo much to support the organic movement,
I bought a pair of Del Forte Callas a month or so ago. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.
Hands down, del forte offers the most feminine, complimentary and gorgeous jean
on the market.
