TAGEI CONVERTIBLE FURNITURE by Akemi Tanaka

Akemi Tanaka, Futaba, Tagei, Pratt Industrial Design, transformer furniture, transforming furniture, table unfolds into seat

The word Tagei means versatility in Japanese, and what better way to describe this fabulous line of plyboo furniture that converts from table into bench? Brooklyn designer Akemi Tanaka caught our eye last year when she debuted her clever Futaba unfolding couch/table. Now Akemi’s got a new addition to the eco-friendly, transforming-furniture family, and we think its as cute and clever as its big sister Futaba.

Similar to Futaba, Tagei is a plyboo and upholstery seat that folds down into a compact coffee table. Unlike Futaba — a full couch that takes time to fold up and down — the Tagei is more of a bench than a couch, and allows a quicker transformation from table to seat. It’s the perfect piece for those moments when you need an extra seat for a party, but don’t want to take up too much space in your home.

The piece is not just cleverly space-saving, but is also made entirely out of eco-friendly material. For those of you who may not love stripes, Akemi tells us that she can do the cushions in any color. If you are interested in the piece, please contact Akemi directly.

Now that’s a clever and useful idea. Unlike the booklight item featured below, which is clever but wasteful and not eco-friendly!

concept is outstanding but taste of colour combination is not upto the mark.it is a great effort anyway.

I absolutely lov the table. its new, modern, functional and looks like it could be in an ordinary home as opposed to a show room.
How much would this kind of furniture cost?. is it a show room or a practical cost?

Akemi Tanaka’s TAGEI sells for $4,700 which is a great deal when you consider the materials and quality fo construction. The opening mechanism is a wonderful piece of engineering, and when open, the leafs can support a substantial amount of weight. I am a current student at a small community college and I am taking an Art Apreciation class. I am writing to say that I truly like your choice of designs. I have to write a paper on furniture design and have picked you as my inspiration, to write on. I belive that your designs are very creative with a classy and sassy style that holds a classic feel about it. Keep up the great designs! :o )
