MARIA YEE ECO-FRIENDLY FURNITURE

by Matt Chapman

Maria Yee, BambooJoinery, Bambootimbre, Shinto side table

Maria Yee has been making big strides in contemporary green furniture design. While not the most cutting edge conceptually, the Santa Cruz designer does make eco minded, heirloom quality furniture that you can purchase for your home without totally breaking the bank. And that, dear readers, is a major accomplishment. Stylistically, her work is often an asian inspired modern mix of casegoods, beds, and now upholstery items. (Disclosure: I have one of her Shinto side tables in my living room and absolutely love it).

Maria Yee BambooTimbre Furniture

Her innovative manufacturing techniques and materials are what are so groundbreaking. Most of the furniture is made from BambooTimbre, proprietary solid bamboo specially developed for furniture manufacturing. To that she has added a new twist, BambooJoinery, an application of traditional Chinese joinery techniques to her new material that allows her to eschew the use of nails in her furniture. Seal it all together with glue that meets E1 standards, and you have quite a compelling product line.

How much is that beautiful bed frame and do you have a store near or in the solano county area?

Evelyn, the bed frame you’re referring to is called the Metro low platform bed. You can order the item from either Gump’s San Francisco, CA (800.766.7628) or Star Pierce Design, San Anselmo, CA (415.455.9697). A queen-size bed retails for approximately $3,600.

Hi,
I live in Berkeley, but am willing to travel. Where can I see/purchase Maria Yee’s furniture?

Does she have a web site?

Does she use stains, lacquers that do not “off gas”?

Thanks,

Sally

Sally,

You can learn more about Maria Yee at http://www.mariayee.com. All of Maria Yee’s products are finished with only water-based or low-solvent materials. Some of Maria Yee’s BambooTimbre products are colored through a carbonization process using steam heating. No peroxides are ever used. Moreover, BambooTimbre never needs synthetic polymers to protect the surface, therefore never releasing any harmful volatile compounds into our environment.

I would suggest you visit Gump’s San Francisco or the SF-based Crate&Barrel for a selection of Maria Yee items. Room&Board in San Francisco also carries a wide selection of Maria Yee products. If you’d like more store listings, you can email info@mariayee.com.

I bought 4 pieces, including the bed shown above and a media cabinet similar to the cabinet above. They’re beautiful. I ordered them on December 5, 2006 and accepted delivery on June 1, 2007. I don’t think I’d wait that long again.
