LONDON FASHION WEEK: Eco-Fashion Label Amana

by Jill Danyelle

Amana is a new eco-fashion label that recently launched in London. The name is a Moroccan Arabic word that means “delivered in confidence,” and is fitting for a line that seems to have done just that. The label was started by Helen Wood and Erin Tabrar. Helen became interested in sustainable practices while studying fashion design at Central St. Martin’s and Erin did her dissertation on ethical fashion while studying management at The London College of Fashion.

The duo have created their inaugural line of eleven pieces with fabrics that have minimal negative impact on the environment, such as organic cottons, hemp and silk blends, chunky hemp cord, and hemp denim. The garments are made by women artisans in Ain Leuh, a village perched high in the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The company ensures good working conditions, payments and provides technical assistance and training.

WOW what an amazingly gorgeous line you have created!
I Love EVERYTHING about it! Especially the name!
My name is Amana, which is actually a very unusual name for someone born and raised in the Western United States.
I have 30 years of fashion experience and have been involved in all levels of clothing design and manufacturing. I specialize in pattern making, fit and production.
I am currently working with women’s co-operatives in Nepal, Indonesia, India and Zambia using sustainable fibers.
I’d love to talk to you, if only to share the co-incidence of our purpose and our name.
Currently I am based in Southern California, but open to changes.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Amana

Amana,

You’ve come a long way from selling me a set of Sony speakers! If you have the time I’d like to hear of your experiences abroad.
