THE REEE RECYCLED PLAYSTATION CHAIR

If you’re a gamer who’s concerned about the state of the planet, have we got just the thing for you! Now you can send your old dusty video game consoles to a better place with the Reee Chair – an ingenious design by British company Pli. The seat and back of the Reee chair is made up of 100% recycled Playstation 2 console casings – so you can play your Playstation 3 while sitting on old Playstation 2s. Aaah the cycle of life…

£99.00 from Pli Design

We thought this brilliant design very timely in lieue of our upcoming event about Reclaimed Design this week. Each seat and back of the chair makes a new home for 2.3kg of used plastic, and the frame is made from powdercoated steel for strength and durability. The best part is that it’s designed for disassembly and further recycling. It’s also easily repaired or refurbished.

What a nifty idea! Wonder if they can do the same for my old desktop…

Nice little idea.. just 2 qualms about the product:

1) It would be better if the entire chair is made of recyclable material, instead of just the seat and back.
2) You can’t see its PS2 “genes” unless somebody tells you.

These look really rather cool, and something we’d definitely consider stocking at Nigel’s Eco Store, in our sustainable furniture section (http://www.nigelsecostore.com/acatalog/eco-furniture.html). With new versions of computers, games and appliances coming out all the time, it’s great, and inspiring, that clever people find ways of recycling them into cool and innovative products. But agree with Hun – shame you can’t tell they’re recycled from PS2 just by looking at them – might give them the x-factor.

As the designer off this chair I was fascinated by the idea of ‘ghost brands’ – making something new out of branded waste. The new object gains something more as a result of it’s previous life. Practically though this is a school and office chair and we cannot explicitly advertise playstations to kids in class!
