POSTOPOLIS BEGINS!

Postopolis opened yesterday to a warm reception over at the Storefront For Art and Architecture Gallery on Kenmare street in SoHo. I was thrilled to see all four of our blogs’ names posted in giant lettering on the outside of the store, and the speakers were uniformly excellent and thought-provoking. Now that we’ve warmed up a bit, today promises to be even better with a fabulous line-up of architects and architectural pundits….

including three groundbreaking architects who also happen to be my three favorite professors at the GSAPP, a presentation by eco-design collaborative Terreform, as well as a panel on sustainable design at 4pm featuring Susan Szenasy of Metropolis, Allan Chochinov of Core77, Graham Hill of Treehugger, and yours truly.

Wednesday 30 May

1:30pm: Benjamin Aranda & Chris Lasch
2:10pm: Matthew Clark, Ove Arup
4:00pm: Panel on sustainable design with Susan Szenasy of Metropolis, Allan Chochinov of Core77, Graham Hill of Treehugger, Jill Fehrenbacher (Inhabitat of course!)
5:30pm: Scott Marble, Marble Fairbanks
6:10pm: Paul Seletsky of SOM, AIA
6:50pm: Ada Tolla & Giuseppe Lignano, LOT-EK
7:30pm: Michael Sorkin & Mitchell Joachim (Terreform)

POSTOPOLIS will be 5 days of continuous conversation about architecture, urbanism, landscape, and design blogging. We have an amazing line up of speakers that includes Lebbeus Woods, Mark Wigley, Ada Tolla & Giuseppe Lignano of LOT-EK, Michael Sorkin & Mitchell Joachim, Michael Bierut and William Drenttel, among others. In fact, we have so many great speakers that I am planning to be there for 5 full days straight to catch it all. Even if you can only pop by for an hour or so on one day, I highly encourage you to stop by and say hi. The event is free and open to the public and is sure to be a good time.

By inviting four bloggers from four different cities, to host a series of live discussions, interviews, slideshows, panels, talks, and other presentations, New York’s Storefront for Art and Architecture aims to fuse the informal energy and interdisciplinary approach of the architectural blogosphere with the immediacy of face to face interaction. For the past five years, blogging has helped to expand the bounds of architectural discussion; its influence now spreads far beyond the internet to affect museums, institutions, and even higher education. Postopolis! is an historic opportunity to look back at what architecture blogs have achieved – both to celebrate their strengths and to think about their future.

The Storefront for Art and Architecture is a New York City art gallery founded in 1982. In 1993 the building was renovated in a collaboration between architect Steven Holl and artist Vito Acconci to create a unique ground-floor exhibition space with moveable hinged facade panels that can be opened and closed to create different degrees of accessibility to the street and public. The space is not only an amazing work of architecture, but also a great gallery and event space, and we are very excited to be working with Storefront to put this exhibition together. If you live in the area, don’t miss it!

I love that frontage… I’m sure it’ll be a brilliant event, I just wish I could hop on a transatlantic flight but never mind! Good luck!

Why is every interesting design conference or event in New York, L.A., or Chicago? Down here in South Florida it seems like no-one knows green design/building even exists, and were the ones who should worry about it the most. We’ll be gone in 30 years without some changes. Send some love down south, we need help!

Tyler,
this seems like a perfect opportunity for some heads to get together and start something…

_as for postopolis, i’ve only been in the city for a week and had the chance to catch the finale on tuesday night and i thought not only the space is brilliant, but that this indeed is a great event! looking forward to the rest

Great event! Wish I could be there. Tyler, you’d be surpised at how much green design/building is starting to sprout down here in South Florida. Miami has recently adopted new laws to make it easier for green builders to get projects up and running. There’s momentum down here for sure…it’s just finding the places where the action is at.
