If you are looking for a cool alternative to your average, run-of-the-mill upholstered furniture, the latest buzz (and one of the stunners of the HauteGREEN show) is the Emir chair by Lars Urheim of the Norwegian design house Trokk16. A beautiful specimen of classic Scandinavian design, the Emir chair is constructed out of natural latex foam, sustainable wood, wool fabric and woolen felt. The biodegradable Emir is as much about form as it is about substance. According to Urheim, the chair’s components can easily be separated and reused or recycled after its initial use has run its course.

Comprised of four young designers from Bergen, Trokk16 is making its presence felt throughout the European design scene, appearing in such prominent fairs such as last year’s 100% Norway in London and this year’s Haute Green show in New York.

I have an idea. What if upholstered furniture was all designed so it was easy to reupholster. That way when the fabric gets old, all you need is some new fabric to breathe another 10 years of life into a chair. I see so many chairs getting thrown out that would be fine if the fabric was reupholstered. So many designs are designed so you can’t redo it yourself and therefore are often forced to buy a new chair. Anyways, theres my 2c idea.

I agree — furniture that is easy to reupholster! There are quite a few designs that are easy to reupholster (some IKEA, Calico Corners, Pottery Barn, etc.), but styles are limited. I make washable slip-covers for my furniture, but it is a major undertaking. Even better, furniture that comes with removable, washable upholstery. Again, there are some available, but styles are limited.

The really significant question running through my mind is “It looks great, but what does it FEEL like to SIT in?”

It looks wonderfully comfy! Sadly it’s yet another prototype that isn’t for sale. But at least the good ideas are flowing strong!
