The boring organic version aside. There is nothing eco, sustainable or biodegradeable about the environsax graphic series. Even the dyes are your ‘bad for the earth standard,’ its essentially a heavy duty plastic bag with some fancy designs. There are so many other bag companies that produce great bags from recycled or sustainable materials.

While these bags may not be made of sustainable materials and inks, and even though there are numerous other brands of bags that are made of hemp/organic cotton/2nd gen fabrics, there are benefits to these bags. If the various designs can attract more people to the use of reusable shopping bags, then some good is being done. I don’t know about you guys, but I usually fill more than one bag when I go grocery shopping, and with price tags upwards of $150 on a lot of those bags mentioned above, $35 for a pack of 5 is pretty reasonable. Ease up guys, and whats with the elipsis at the end of everyones comment?…

I agree with Tyler. with these bags being bigger and affordable it is better than doing nothing and folks still using the plastic store bags. We have to start somewhere. We can’t all be 100% at the beginning. It will take time, but we have to start somewhere. Plus if there are heavy duty bags, then they will last longer and there will be no need to buy more. just my 2 cents.

Oh man.. those Envirosax-knockers are off their rcokers.
These bags are the lightest, most compact, most durable shopping bags I’ve ever purchased.
I have a huge collection of multi-use bags from cotton totes to recycled plastic ones from the grocery store. ALL of the alternative bags I’ve tested, and I probably most of the examples of good bags you provided, are too heavy, too bulky, and otherwise impractical for everyday use — my other bags either wear out, and/or get way too dirty to look decent after a few uses, even with laundering. Envirosax are small enough to allow you to carry a bunch in your purse for those market stops between home and work.

Any bag that reduced the number of cheap disposable plastic bags is a step in the right direction. The more user-friendly the bags, the larger the number of plastic bags they will usurp.

Of course, poly-nylon lacks the environmental gold star — I’m hoping to check out Envirosax’s brand new line of sustainable fabric bags, but at $25/ea that brings up another point — cost. Toting groceries requires many bags, not just one beautiful courier bag. I think the idea of spending $150 for a collection of cotton bags might scare people away.

Lastly, I wonder if material considerations apply equally to other items like backpacks, ski boots, jackets, and bathing suits. Anyone questioning the green merits of Envirosax better be planning to do their hiking in canvas boots, pitching their canvas tents, swimming in cotton bathing suits, and enjoying toting their heavy oilcloth raingear along. It’s very difficult to avoid man-made fibres these days. Merino Wool makes a lovely alternative to Polar Fleece.. but damn, it’s pricey.

From Envirosax to motorcycle helmets, to salvaged-material items, the issue is how we manage the manufacture and disposal of these products in our lives, not squashing every small attempt to improve what’s truly broken.
