Your evaluation of LEDs being narrow purposed and inefficient must be based on dated information. The science and manufacture of LEDs is improving at an extraordinary rate, and within the last year, it is not uncommon to see white LEDs with efficiency well beyond 100 lumens/watt. The product in question itself is more efficient than the fluorescent tube it replaces, albeit with a much higher initial cost ($150/tube).

As for how long LEDs last with phosphor coating, there have been many recent improvements to the way the coating is applied, but the whole thing is rather irrelevant when you are talking about a device that lasts 100,000+ hours anyway. Nothing else even comes close that kind of usable lifespan.

If you think “numbers matter”, you should look at some. At this point, it is naive not to recognize that LED technology is destined to eventually replace all other forms of lighting, as the efficiency, output, and manufacturing methods and costs continue to improve.

LEDs are an amazingly expensive sideshow, which really aren’t that green in their own manufacture, and the best lab specimens are as energy efficient good as the worst factory grade flouros – and nowhere near HID efficiency. Furthermore, white ones rely on phosphorescent coatings that burn out far faster than their colored counterparts, which last essentially forever.

LEDs are perfect for what they do best – colored directional lighting. Flourescents are good for their niche as well – small-medium scale modular saturation lighting. HIDs are great for large-scale illumination and seriously-bright spotlighting.

There is a serious lack of skepticism in the green community. I’m constantly frustrated by this, because reasoned debate (rather than feelgood hippy cheerleading) is required to arrive at solutions to our problems that actually work, that actually make a difference in the world. Numbers fucking matter.
