Going back to school not only means class registration and mentally gearing up for another year of concentrated learning- it usually involves a good deal of shopping. Texbooks are just the beginning- the little things like pencils, pens, paper, and notebooks, can really add up- for your wallet and for the environment. So make greener choices this year and go back to school in sustainable academic style. Here are some recommendations for eco school supplies…

Recycled Pencils
The good old #2 pencil isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The good news is that there are now some eco choices, including Paper Mate® EarthWrite™ Recycled Pencils made from 100% recycled materials, down to the lead and eraser. If you’re in the market for something a little more fun, check out Smencils, made from recycled newspapers and infused with scents- for some scratchin’ sniffin’ writin’ fun.

+ PaperMate EarthWrite – $4.39 for a box of 48 at Office Depot

+ Smencils – $10 for a pack of 10 at Uncommon Goods

Eco-Friendly Pens
If you’re more a pen person, there are a bunch of green pen options as well, including Pilot’s recycled BeGreen Pens. Unfortunately they’re only available in the UK and Canada, or through a few online retailers. Other options include biodegradable pens from Industries Of The Blind and Vegan Essentials.

+ Pilot BeGreen pens- prices vary at Cult Pens
+ Biodegradable pens – $1.95 each at Vegan Essentials

100% Recycled printer paper
This should be an obvious one, and big retailers like Staples are now starting to carry 100% recycled paper more commonly. Look for acid-free papers with 100% post-consumer content that meets or exceeds the Government Printing Office and EPA’s standard for recycled paper.

+ $6.49 for a ream or $47.99 for a case from Staples.com

Eco and super-cute notebooks
Who doesn’t love a cute notebook that’s good for the environment too? Ecojot notebooks are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper and come in a variety of graphic designs and sizes. Their new site will launch in September, but in the meantime, buy a set from Delight.

+ $14 for a set from Delight

Hello,
I am looking for an eco-friendly binder that will hold approximately 100 pages. Please send me samples if possible to: Dr. Pat Hayden, 4740 Connecticut Ave. NW Ste. Ste. 1016, Washington, DC 20008.

Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Pat Hayden

I like to use Fish Lips Paper Designs gift wrap as book covers. Not only are they made with 100% recycled paper with really great designs, but the paper is very thick, so its lasts all school year. http://www.fishlipspaperdesigns.com

You guys should totally partner up with staples/office depot. I would be one of your biggest Teen customers if you did. Buying online is out of the question for me i don’t have a visa.
