EKOVARUHUSET ECO FASHION SHOW

Ekovaruhuset, which translates to ‘House of Organic’ in Swedish, is an eco-boutique founded by Johanna Hofring. She opened the first Ekovaruhuset shop in Stockholm in 2004 to bring one-of-a-kind, hand-made eco-creations to Sweden. The second boutique opened up in NYC last year and has quickly become one of our local favorites. Ekovaruhuset carries a few brands, like eco-sneaker favorite Veja, but stocks the shop mostly with their own designs crafted from a collective of select designers.

The Ekovaruhuset designers had their first NY fashion show last week and were a welcome addition to the small but growing number of organic designers at NY Fashion Week. The designers created looks that reflect their own style while also maintaining a cohesive aesthetic overall. The show included everything from a beautifully draped tweed jacket with cut-outs and sexy, crocheted numbers to bikinis and a wedding dress. If Ekovaruhuset continues to successfully walk the line between the fashion-forward design we crave and practical wearability we need, they should continue to receive accolades from a growing fan base of eco-fashionistas.

Nice to see eco fabrics being used for fashion, but like the rest of the fashion designers around the world, they only design for young skinny girls. Most of what they design can not be worn to the workplace and/or for clients and worse, if any women has any curve or does not a perfect skinny figure, the clothes will not fit or look like what they show on the runway. Eco Fashion Designers…. you still have a long way to go.

I am so thrilled that eko fashion has come such a long way! I need to know where I can buy these. So glad to see so much creativity!

I was bummed about the above comment. For the record I think the models look good! I have seen skinner!
funny how people think its so much more PC to just make clothes bigger and bigger and not address that this country has a serious weight problem. Some people just need to put down the Big Macs and I think they’ll start to feel much better about themselves!

I agree with you, Sally Anne.. Although, it’s a start and I do believe that it’ll be the young and hip that will ignite a real interest in making this arena stronger for organic and sustainabily focused fashions.

I have to also think that the current price point for these hip duds also puts them far out of reach of most people.

Hey, we all have to wear clothes so I think it’d be a very good idea if organic fabric started to be available in fabric stores…. (along with some cool patterns too, maybe?)

Little by little… we’ll get there. I just hope the progress is as fast as we all need it to be in order to save the planet and ourselves!

But, kuddos for some pretty terrific looking clothing!

First, organic fabrics are available. For starters, try Near Sea Naturals.

Second, in general, most fashion that is coming down the runway is of a higher price point, unless it is a rather large company. You can find a range of prices and styles available in clothing in general, albeit less variety in eco. We have covered the range, from H&M to Martin Margiela Artisanal.

Third, yes, models are thin, but that does not mean clothing isn’t available in larger sizes… ask Queen Latifah who dressed her for the Oscars. Haven’t you seen Oprah’s curves in Vera Wang?

How can I see the work that your designer Meiling Chen had made.
I know and like her work and would like to see more.
