Forget solar powered backpacks and panels - Ermenegildo Zegna’s Solar-Powered Jacket is hands down the most practical and best-looking way to charge your mobile gadgets that we have seen in a while. The jacket is slated to hit stores in November, but one New Yorker gave it a test drive and appeared to become a little obsessed with charging every small gadget he could find… including a mini refrigerator.

Sounds like a pretty good idea, but is it really practical? That collar doesn’t look as though it would be particualrly comfortable. How flexible are the photovoltaic cells?
You might be surprised. Polymer-based photovoltaic cells are tremendously thinner and more flexible than their glass cousins.

So, that’s it? just the collar?
That’s not a whole lot of power. I thought the whole thing would be covered in solar cells.

nate,
it is cold and sunny in many places.
I can vouch for NYC and I think the penguins and Santa could weigh in on the poles.
There is actually usually more sunlight when it is cold then when it is hot.
Think about it.
When it is cold, there is a higher chance of there being snow, which sunlight reflects off of.
If you are in England, this might not be true, since it rains a lot, which means more clouds. You gotta feel sorry for those Brits. :(

They need to make the whole jacket a solar cell using Thin Film solar cells versus sticking small flexible solar panels on the jacket.
Once they get to a point where the fabric of the jacket is acutally made from solar cells, that is when I will buy a solar powered jacket.
