LIGHTS OUT SAN FRANCISCO TONIGHT! - October 20th

by Emily Pilloton

lights out San Francisco, CFL, Energy Savings

Calling all San Franciscans!!!! Today’s the day- October 20th- turn off all non-essential lights from 8-9pm, Pacific Time!

You might be wondering what a difference an hour of darkness can really make, but Lights Out San Francisco estimates that as much as 15 percent of the energy consumed on an average Saturday night will be saved by turning out lights for merely an hour.

Those interested in supporting the effort will be in good company, as The Bay Bridge and TransAmerican Building have agreed to participate. At a very minimum we hope that local residents will take advantage of the distribution of free compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout the city by Lights Out San Francisco.

Lights Out San Francisco started locally out of the bay area and was later picked-up by the LA times moving the movement to southern California. A grassroots organization started by Bay Area residents, Lights Out San Francisco is run by environmentalists, technologists, writers and educators who all carry a similar passion when it comes to fighting global warming, while finding ways to take action at a local level.

Similar to Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, Lights Out San Francisco hopes to be equally successful, and hopefully reoccurring. Earth Hour included participation from over 2.2 million people resulting in savings of 24.86 tons of carbon dioxide. The results from Saturday, October 22nd will be posted on the website, so stay tuned to see what type of impact you made on that night.

Wanted to let you know, your link in the graphic is not to “lightsoutsf.org” but it’s to “lightsout.org.”

“lightsout.org” is a anti-Daytime Running Lights website, with the intention of stopping cars from having such lighting. Interesting.

Just wanted to FYI.

any one know if lights out sf is just for sf or would it matter if greater bay area residents (i live in oakland) participated? i guess part of the question is how they are going to gauge the results… ie sf used this much less electricity or PG and E were able to put out this much less electricity

Plants thrive on carbon dioxide, its what they breathe and convert to oxygen.

Check out this interesting article on a similar plan that was abandoned in the UK due to technical constraints. Wonder if this would be a similar problem in SF?

The symbolism is nice and I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade but no power plant can adjust output that quickly. This is kind of a sick trick to play on power companies because they have to dump the unused electricity. On the other hand PG&E is deserving of tricks far worse.
