Canada’s Greenest Building?

Green architecture seems to have taken the world by storm, and not a week goes by without a number of buildings making bold claims as to what their green credentials are. Not wanting to be left out of the global race to have the greenest building ever, seven local non-profit groups have revealed the design for the Maison du développement durable (Sustainable Development House), which they claim will be Canada’s greenest building.
The 28.5 million, 5,700 square meter project, located in the city of Montreal, was designed by the Anik Shooner, Jean-Pierre Letourneux, and Joanne Parent Architects. The center is the brainchild of seven Quebecoise environmental organizations, led by Equiterre, and aims to serve as headquarters for local environmental organizations.
The plan is for the building to be one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world. The design calls for the use of geothermal combined with thermal accumulators for cooling and heating, recycling industrial containers to be used in the building’s structure, bicycles facilities, and even an interior wall garden to filter the air inside the building. And as you’d expect, the building is aiming for a Canadian LEED certification.
It is expected that the building will be finished by 2010.
