We know you have brilliant ideas for greener gadgets - since so many of you write in to us all the time with your ideas. It costs NOTHING to submit your work to this groundbreaking competition, so submit today! What have you got to lose?

We are teaming up with industrial design supersite Core77 to launch this fabulous design competition, and we are giving away $4500 in cash prizes to the most innovative and inspiring designs for greener consumer electronics.

Design Brief

We’re inviting designers to explore the concept of “Greener Gadgets.” Designs should seek to minimize the environmental impact of consumer electronic devices at any stage in the product lifecycle. Areas of sustainability to consider include:

1. Energy
2. Materials / Lifecycle / Recycling
3. Social & educational development

Participants are encouraged to consider their designs as part of the entire product ecosystem, and should think as holistically as possible. Designers may choose to focus their entries on a particular area of human enterprise (learning, playing, communicating, etc.), or a particular context (work, home, school, etc.), a particular material, or a specific device. Entries may also seek to create new paradigms for products and services.

Ultimately, we are looking for “great gadgets” of the greener kind.

Judging

Entries will be pre-judged by representatives from Core77, Inhabitat and Greener gadgets. A set of finalists will be selected for final judging LIVE on stage at the Greener Gadgets Conference on February 1st, 2008 in New York City. (Finalists are not required to be in attendance.) Winner and runners up will be determined at the event though a combination of on-stage judging panelists and audience votes.

Judging Criteria

Entries will be judged on the following criteria: innovation, clarity of design, originality, form and presentation.

Prizes

Grand Prize: US$2,500
Two Runners Up: US$1,000 each

Schedule

December 26th: Submission begins
January 27th 11:59pm EST: Entry Deadline (competition closes)
January 29th: Finalists notified
February 1st: Finalists showcased at Greener Gadgets Conference. Winner and runners up selected

I DON’T CARE ABOUT THIS ANYMORE.
IF YOU HAD ANY OTHER AREAS OF COMPETITION BESIDES ELECTRONICS I COULD SEE PUTTING THIS UP 500 TIMES.
BUT YOU DON’T. MY GUESS IS THAT MOST OF YOUR READERS ARE NOT ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS.

If you don’t care, just ignore the post. You don’t need to be an engineer to come up with smart ideas on better designed electronics. We believe in our readership and know that we have a lot of smart, talented and creative readers, so we are going to continue to promote this great opportunity until the competition is over.

Thanks Jill,
I have a lot of wonderful ideas, but none of them are electronics. Electronics are not going to save the world. New ways of thinking about the things we have now are going to make the difference. Like cash flow housing or small business green education. There are a million Electronics shows where you get to see the things of tomorrow that never come. Think about all the electronics we have been waiting thirty years for.
The magic is in the application. Where is the conference fliers for that Jill?
