SUSTAINABLE STYLE: Organic Tees and Hoodies for Guys

by Abigail Doan

Organic cotton collections for men no longer consist of just plain old white tees. Both Edun and People Tree are sporting cool, earth-savvy graphics on their t-shirts and hoodies for Spring/Summer ‘08. Easy to care for and even easier to wear, we love seeing our favorite eco-activists in green threads like these. 100% organic cotton never looked so good!

Edun’s ‘Twisted Tree’ organic cotton print tee (made in Peru) highlights Edun’s sustainability agenda with edgy visuals emblazoned on non-toxic, environmentally friendly fabric. Edun was launched in Spring 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono with a headstrong mission “to create beautiful clothing while fostering sustainable employment in developing areas of the world, particularly Africa.” The ‘Twisted Tree’ tee certainly mixes rocker appeal with down-to-earth wearability. Similarly, the UK’s People Tree is creating hoodies with ‘Soil Association certified organic, Fairtrade cotton’ - for the people and for the planet. Their medium weight, cotton jersey ‘Pedal Power Hoody’ makes the campaign for transportation alternatives convincingly hip and stylish.

And we cannot talk about luscious organic cotton pieces for men without checking out Loomstate’s Spring 2008 Collection. Founded in 2004 by designer Rogan Gregory and Scott Hahn, Loomstate was created as “a casual brand dedicated to creating demand for certified organic cotton using socially and environmentally responsible methods of production.” The demand is getting hotter, particularly with Rogan Gregory taking top honors at this year’s CFDA awards. This current collection is definitely about American classics with its pre-worn tees, polos, relaxed-fit shorts, and organic jeans.

my problem with these clothes are first of all, where are they being manufactured? if they are being made overseas, that defeats the purpose of being “green” because so many natural resources go into bringing them over here. a better alternative to organic cotton would be hemp. it is unfortunate that nobody here has talked about how amazing hemp is. i’d rather buy hemp over organic cotton anyday.
