The Hayle Estuary Ecolodge

Architects Gilmore, Hankey and Kirke of GHK International have submitted plans for this beautiful Ecolodge on the edge of the Hayle Estuary in Cornwall, England. The 30-room complex will include a restaurant, cafe and visitors center for bird watchers and eco-tourists alike. Featuring an unobtrusive FSC certified design with a living green roof, the sustainable center will blend into its environment with minimal visual impact from above and on ground.
True to its name, the ecolodge will employ a wide range of sustainable building strategies. Climate control and lighting fixtures will be low energy and toilets will be low flow. Grey water and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) will further reduce its environmental impact and interior design elements will feature non-toxic and sustainable materials.
The Hayle Estuary is home to nearly 20,000 birds annually and is the southernmost bird sanctuary in England. The winter months bring abundant life to the estuary offering a more natural and less impactful approach to tourism. The ecolodge is still pending approval, but GHK architects are expecting completion by fall 2009.
