I’d like to attempt to make some shelves similar to the maze bookshelf. But how are the “shelves” attached to the backing to make them strong enough to actually hold books without breaking?

Great looking piece, but I have a hard time swallowing a design that uses 4 times the amount of wood (as compared with a shelf of similar size and capacity) is somehow good for the forests of the world?
