Note to skaters – according to the Science Channel, skateboards have replaced furniture as the leading contributor to maple deforestation. The Canadian maple takes 40 to 60 years to mature before it can be cut down to make your decks. The good news? BambooSK8 is a true-green company that makes first rate skateboards that are durable, sustainable, and even stronger than maple.

Bamboo is a renewable grass that can be harvested after just five years and requires relatively little energy to produce. Most skateboards are made from maple, although there are some “hybrids” on the market that use a layer or two of bamboo, and some shams that use it only as a veneer. BambooSK8 boards are made from 100% bamboo grown in managed forests.

BambooSK8’s decks are made of three and four layers, or ply, of a certain ideal strain of bamboo that is cured a secret way (BambooSK8 is very guarded about the exact source of their bamboo). The boards are strong, since bamboo has a higher weight-to-strength ratio than maple — it takes 1639 pounds of pressure to bend bamboo versus 1450 pounds for hard maple.

In addition to being strong, the boards are light. Decks weigh between 2.5 and 2.85 pounds. Bamboo is also more elastic than maple, making these boards resilient and less likely to break. Testimonials from BambooSK8 fans on their web site gush about the boards’ light weight, unbreakability, and “pop.”

BambooSK8 is a member of the Action Sports Environmental Coalition and their commitment goes beyond the company — the owner has installed the largest residential solar panel system in California.

Is the bamboo for these skateboards processed in a way to minimize formaldehyde emissions?

It’s a nice idea but until they can get these to be affordably pressed either for or by the big skateboard companies they’re not going to make a big impact. I hope that this company can make the move to mass produce for the rest of the industry if their skateboards are actually as good as they claim. Otherwise they’ll be another tiny little company stuck in the corner of the tradeshow that all the cool kids pass by.

I had no idea skateboarding was popular enough again to de-forest … i use to skateboard in highscool back in New Orleans - and this makes me sad to know. most kids who skateboard seem to be slightly more socially aware about issues and i hope that they learn to skate on something that doesnt F up our planet.

Bamboo boards are pretty awesome but still can’t retain the impacts in the daily life of a skateboard. Every board that is on the market is designed to be destroyed, therefore kids must keep purchasing these on a regular basis generating the profits the companies want to see.

This guy is building boards that are nearly indestructible. 14-16 plys of maple that practically never lose their pop.
buy one board, instead of 20. that would make a huge impact environmentally!

I am amazed by how people are so quick to judge a new idea. What happened to praising clever ideas and solutions? This board rocks, It reminds me of my wood snow board. Very classic, Very minimal. Best of luck to BambooSK8 !!!

I do agree in part with jshiney. Consumption is another huge part of sustainable living and it is often overlooked. As for the boards durability, bamboo is a pretty tough material, so I would think that it would be very durable and would last much longer than comparable maple boards.

Question? - jshiney, have you had the opportunity to test this board’s durability?

Bamboo is a hard and durable material, but it has very different reactions to the abuse that a skateboard is intended to take. Since I haven’t tried one of these I don’t know if a few railslides will cause the bamboo to shred into long fibers that will degrade the entire deck’s structure or whether it will wear similarly or better than a typical maple deck. We just don’t know and so it’s not the worst thing to ask these questions.
I applaud the ingenuity of the bamboosk8, but since I’ve been involved in the action sports business for nearly 20 years I’ve seen a heck of a lot of solutions looking for problems (and looking for money) that didn’t come close to delivering. So I’m sorry if I and a lot of skaters come off a little skeptical of new “innovations”. Don’t forget that when you’re trying to ollie down a set of stairs equipment performance or lack of can be a real safety hazard.
And yes I know that skateboarding is a safety hazard in and of itself.
