CES 2009: Flexible OLED Wrist Display Unveiled

We always knew that cutting edge-technology integrated with OLEDs would provide some crazy gadgets in the future – we just had no idea we’d see them take on the form of a fashion accessory so soon. Our friends at Engadget recently got a first glance at this flexible OLED wristband prototype developed by Universal Display Corporation with support from the U.S. Department of Defense. Devices such as this may one day form the basis for a new generation of energy-efficient wearable communications devices.
Unless you are working with government intelligence you’re unlikely to see this wristband anytime in the very near future, but you have to admit it opens the door to many exciting applications that are in store for OLEDs. The thin 4-inch malleable metal foil display is capable of packing an impressive amount of information, and may be featured in a device that includes 3G HSDPA capability.

Abramson, President and CEO of Unversal Display states: “The device combines the significant energy savings of Universal Display’s phosphorescent OLED technology with the inherent benefits of a flexible OLED into an ultrathin display with a crisp beautiful picture, a wide viewing angle and a novel form factor. In addition to military field communications, this device suggests a number of exciting possibilities for consumer-oriented products.”
