This is not true for PC computers (wheter they run Windows or Linux) in many cases, especially with desktop computers.

What really reduces the carbon footprint of Mac computers during their lifetime (assuming the user has not been subscribed for wind electricity, which is higly recommended anyway, btw!), is that fact that power saving features actually works in Macs and are enabled by default: Mac goes to sleep if not used, also a desktop mac. I am still a strong believer that going green, should be the normal way of doing things and not done simply for publicity. The simple fact that Apply has voluntarily chosen to go green is great news. I am sure most people purchasing their computers don't even care about sustainability - design is seems to be the big seller. I have to agree with the first commenter, it a good start. With that said, there does need to be some monitoring of companies going green.

Great story to raise awareness. That feature was present on one of the prototypes but never made it into production.

Actually the XO doesn’t have a hand-crank. I would however like to mention that on the Apple site http://www.apple.com/mac/green-notebooks/ they have indeed claimed to be "Green Notebooks" and that the the Macbook is "The greenest family of notebooks" not as you have said "the greenest laptop".While these are just words I still feel they can be commended for finally taking steps toward using less chemicals and reducing footprints. More to come I hope.

Thank you for the report it is great to see the details of such claims. I would however like to mention that on the Apple site <a
