SUSTAINABLE STYLE: Frei Spring ‘09 Collection
by Yuka Yoneda, 04/05/09There is something about the sensation of pure, natural fabrics against your skin that just makes you feel like the world is your oyster. And when the fabric is constructed into fresh, flowy dresses and separates like the kind that Annie Novotny of Frei Designs designs for her spring ‘09 collection , well, then you’re really walking on air!

Frei first caught our eye at D&A Green Room in 2008, with its sweet and feminine spring line inspired by the Greek goddess Persephone. Fast forward one year and we are thrilled to see that designer Anne Novotny has stepped up her game with a sophisticated Spring collection for 2009. The line, cut from organic fabrics hand-dyed with natural colorants like orange madder root and gray logwood, looks like a summer watercolor painting in coral and cream. This time, Annie drew her inspiration from Buddhist parables and Tibetan prayer flags, giving the gauzy tops and fluid bottoms a versatile world-traveler look that can easily be worn to a brunch or a day at the office.

We love the novel touches that Annie added, such as bubbly collars and flowy sleeves. Even with these sculpted details, Frei’s looks are totally wearable with loose-fitting, but flattering silhouettes and comfy wide-leg cut pants. And all of the pieces are sewn in Chicago by workers who are paid a fair wage, giving you one more reason to smile this Spring when you wear these gorgeous garments.

These are beautiful pieces! I hope the price isn’t too crazy because I would love one of those whispy tops.
