At Milan’s 2009 furniture fair, Designersblock did not depart from its habit of showing the very best in fresh new design, and ChunWei Liao’s Transformer furniture and lighting collection is the perfect example of the show’s unique and innovative spirit. The Taiwanese designer presented a stellar catalog of work, but the most interesting product in the series was the lamp grandly named “Transformer Lighting Infinity.”
Made entirely from cardboard, the understructure of the suspension lamp is a flat sheet joined end-to-end. Liao cut slots into the surface at regular intervals and attached little pyramids that you can personalize by drawing, painting or writing on them. The result is an amazing Jekyll/Hyde effect: Without the attachments, the holes cut into the base filter light in a very subtle and graphic way; once you add the pyramids, however, the lamp morphs into a funky, stegosaurus-esque shape. (Fun note: ChunWei Liao’ passion for common packaging material is not random—his father owns a cardboard factory back in Taiwan.)
It would be hard to tire of this cardboard chandelier because you can change and individualize it ad infinitum. But if you do get bored, no worries—it’s 100% recycable!
