Design Green Awards Elevate Sustainable Architecture in California

Design Green Awards Elevate Sustainable Architecture in California

The Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles recently announced the winners of the Design Green awards at a recent ceremony hosted by the AIA/LA to recognize outstanding work built or conceived by Los Angeles architects. Citation, Merit, and Honor Awards were given to six projects that ranged in size from residential to corporate, non-profit to civic and educational, with Honor being the highest award. From the diversity of the projects, it’s clear to see that California architects do more than just design green. With each year and innovation, they elevate green, exceeding our expectations of what a green project should be.

Reclaimed Space Prefab Sold on Ebay for $75K

The fabulous Dwell on Design Show in LA last weekend showcased some amazing new products and home designs, like the organic ‘Solar Ivy‘, and the Mormal Radziner Skyline Prefab Series. Even more exciting though was the little prefab that could by Reclaimed Space, which sold on Ebay for $75,000, with a portion going to Habitat For Humanity. Reclaimed Space designed and built a 400 square foot prefab cabin, trucked it to LA for the event. The home has a contemporary mix of wood and metal in its exterior, and a beautiful interior decorated by our friends at Ecofabulous, with the help of Jeffers Design Group. We’re in love with the design, space and interior — so we weren’t surprised that it was a smash hit at the show.

Dwell on Design Features More Brilliant Green Design Than Ever

Inhabitat is happy to report that Dwell on Design, the west coast’s largest modern design event, featured more smart green design than ever before this year. When we walked the floor yesterday with Dwell Publisher and President Michela O’Connor Abrams (and the carpenter and designer from HGTV’s Carter Can show), it was clear to see that the majority of the companies showcasing their products and services at the three-day festival are paying a great deal more attention to sustainability than in the past. We guestimate that about 80% of the companies there were promoting some kind of green story – in a varying shades, of course. Read on for our highlights from the show!

PREFAB FRIDAY: Marmol Radziner’s Utah House

PREFAB FRIDAY: Marmol Radziner’s Utah House

The folks at Marmol Radziner Prefab have been busy bees these past few months. Aside from their two new Joshua Tree homes, a slew of other custom projects, and Leo Marmol’s lecture and interview at the Dwell on Design conference, the dynamic duo have just completed the initial installation of their Utah House 1. Two days before Thanksgiving Day, the fifteen-module custom home was assembled on site, near Moab, Utah. Before the owners move in after the New Year, all that’s left to do is connect utility lines and seal joints between the modules. Prefabricated in Marmol Radziner’s own state-of-the-art factory, Utah House 1 arrived on site with pre-installed solar panels, windows, doors, and cabinetry.

PREFAB FRIDAY: Interview with Leo Marmol

PREFAB FRIDAY: Interview with Leo Marmol

At the recent Dwell On Design conference in Palm Springs, I had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with Leo Marmol of Marmol Radziner about prefab architecture and sustainability. I asked him about his trajectory as a designer, and what opportunities he sees for prefab to have a larger impact on a wider, more affordable market. His response was thoughtful and optimistic, and provided some great insight into the mind of a forward-thinking and increasingly green designer.
