Designers like Eric Ku are doing it with humor, inventing a flatpack alphabet – his Flatpack Chair is pretty self-explanatory. Philadelphia-based design team MIO has upped the ante for end-user creativity yet again with the introduction of their first LED light fixture. Called Trask because it can switch from being “track” or “task” lighting, the function of this ingenious flatpack lighting system is completely up to you! The modular units can form everything from desk lamps to linkable suspension lights, giving this eco-centric product the option to snake its way across your entire room.

Molo Designs’ flexible honeycomb paper furniture has been a long time favorite of Inhabitat, starting back when we first discovered them in 2005 at ICFF, all the way to the Inhabitat Editors Choice Award they won at last year’s design week. Here’s an example of the IKEA trend of mass-customization taken to its logical conclusion. With the Flatpak house, you pre-fab architecture fans no longer need to be bound by the constraints of a one-size fits all approach (or the dimensions of a flatbed truck). Architect Charles Lazor, of Blu Dot fame, has designed a system of modernist house components that can be custom ordered to anyone’s specifications, and then packed flat for shipping.
