Green-powered productivity, eco-minded collaboration, and a beautiful, open space to do it all in? That’s exactly what Green Spaces, the company that pioneered sustainable office space in New York, has to offer in their newly opened 5,300 sq. foot loft in downtown Manhattan. Partners Jennie Nevin, Marissa Feinberg, and Roberto Rhett hosted a bash last Thursday night to celebrate the opening, and they invited green industry leaders, social entrepreneurs, and select media to check out their expansive new office filled with an eclectic mix of refurbished furniture, emerging eco-art, and a sense of community for all ‘EcoPreneurs’ looking to set up their headquarters in New York City.

HAPPY PARK(ing) DAY!

Keep your eyes open today for impromptu public parks popping up in parking spots around the world as hundreds of peeps take part in PARK(ing) Day! Wow, that was a tongue-twister if we ever heard one. This annual event, started by San Francisco art collective REBAR, is meant to encourage creativity, civic engagement, and interaction and is open to anyone who wants to set up their own park. The Inhabitat Team will be out and about in San Francisco and New York today checking out these pop-up parks and joining in on the fray. We can’t wait to see barbecues, bands, and people hanging out and enjoying the last of the summer sun out on the streets. In case you’re just coming in on this, there’s still time. This weekend, the Designers and Agents fashion trade show has come to LA to showcase the hottest emerging apparel designs. Since environmental sustainability is naturally future-forward, we are thrilled to see the trend-setting D&A show getting serious about eco fashion. At the D&A shows in both New York and Los Angeles, there were dedicated ‘Green Rooms’ to showcase emerging sustainable design. Inhabitat partnered with D&A on the Green Room this year to help curate green furniture, art and product design to compliment the green fashions on display, and we are excited to report back with the latest news.

12 New Solar America Cities Chosen

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 12 new Solar America Cities, bringing the number from 13 to 25 in total, and moving along the $2.4 million initiative to provide up to $200,000 per city to build solid solar infrastructures. The announcement came at the New Frontiers in Energy Summit 2008 in Denver, Colorado, which is among the 2008 Solar America Initiative (SAI) cities. The overall program goals are to facilitate adoption of solar technology by individuals and businesses and to make solar electricity from photovoltaics a cost-competitive energy choice by 2015.

Rocio Romero Prefab Home Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow in NY!

Rocio Romero is one of our favorite prefab designers mastering the art of fusing modernist design with affordability. Her LV series articulates her commitment to minimalism with clean, comfortable lines that attend equally to indoor and outdoor spaces. To date, more than 110 LV prefabs have become home to owners throughout 23 states in the US, with 40 more under construction. While prefab fans have been able to tour the Rocio Romero show home in Missouri for several years, this weekend marks the first time that a finished LV is available for viewing in New York. The first National LV Open House Tour kicks off on March 1st (tomorrow!) in the Hudson Valley!

BIKE SHARING TO SAVE CITIES

If you live in a large city, such as Sydney, New York, or Paris, odds are that you have faced the very serious problem of automotive congestion in the downtown areas. There are a few solutions that so far have been implemented to try and solve the problem, the most famous one is the one introduced in London, where one has to pay to bring in their vehicle to the downtown district. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried proposing a similar system for his city, only to find himself unable to bring it to fruition. Well, the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe , has decided that another way to solve this problem is to provide to people access to cheap alternative, mass transportation, the Velib Bike System.

Still, it was with surprise that New Yorkers watched the swift transformation of a retail space in Union Square from wine store to Puma concept store almost overnight. Thanks to the innovative “Store-In-A-Box” concept – inspired by the fold-out efficiency of mobile shipping containers – Puma was able to set up this store in less than a week. Puma’s new prefab retail system is a marvel of efficiency that anyone who has ever put together a retails store can appreciate.
